Jaques-Henri Lartrigue

Jacques Henri Lartigue is a french photographer who admires and likes to photograph automobile races, planes and fashionable Parisian women. His interests to begin with were painting but as he grew up was photography. Lartrigue always liked movement as when he was younger he would photograph his family moving, jumping but also would build planes, kites etc.

This photo was taken in film so I could trial out film or try with a SLR modern camera. The shutter on this if I was to take this would be one second or less than this to capture the movement without the blur and also on a tripod. I think the black and white look is very captivating as it works really well with the natural lighting used.

I like the way they have been positioned in the middle as it makes them the centre of attention/the main focus. I usually look at photos by using the rule of thirds but I think this is a different approach to my work which I would like to focus on.

I really like this image, it's a different image to Lartigues others and gives off a 1950s look, sex symbol, dark mysterious quite like the film Noir. This picture it's self doesnt fully look at movement but I like the lighting in this coming from the right and the shadows. The mood and story behind this picture is flirty, a sign of love shown from her black nails, elegant hair, lace clothing. It could also have a hidden meaning as in a secret bad relationship from the plain sheets, looks quite lonely and she is looking for attention.

The black and white/sepia look gives it a old fashioned effect. I could take this shoot and look at using black and white trial out lighting coming from one side. The movement of her hair, clothing, arms anything to create a dynamic image.

Rush

(Time stand still)
I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
(Time stand still)
See more of the people and the places that surround me now
Time Stands still
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger
Experience slips away

These are some lyrics which made me think about my theme as I listened to them.

Mark Tull

This is a link too Mark Tull a picture of his with the theme of 'time standing still'. I think it's great inspiration for me to look at. This picture has clocks in it which links to the whole point of 'time standing still' which I think is a great connection. I would like to maybe photograph something like this but with my own edge of editing a picture of a clock and then my movement of people faded onto each other.

Alexey Titarenko

Alexey Titarenko is a black and white photographer capturing movement through industrial towns. His interests seem to lie within the city but old-fashioned parts, such as older buildings and people. The way he captures his photos the people look like like ghosts which could be done as Tirarenko pictures deserted lonely buildings, the people are ghosts as the place he pictures is deserted.

This is a picture from his website and the title of it is called "time standing still" this is great as it's something which is really eye capturing, it makes me think. This photo would of been taken on a tripod and using the shutter speed for probably 3-4 seconds to show that the person is there but to make them also look like a ghost. The mise-en-scene such as what they're wearing is perfect as it adds to the blurriness of the people. I really like how it's taken in black and white as it makes the context of the photo seem old, alongside the builiding used. I think it's quite a scary photo as the people do seem like ghosts as wearing white contrasts against the black and white effect.

This photo is very clever as it uses movement from lighting such as the swirls but also the movement of the people. I think this photo has been edited so two different pictures have been faded onto each other and I think it looks really interesting. The lighting is really beautiful as it's a built up town so the lighting has come through the side of a building. I would really like to trial this by editing two photos on each other using Photoshop then fading them.

Movement

The exam period has started for photography, with 8 different themes. The theme which has drawn me in a lot has been Movement. I think you can look at so much it interests me and requires a lot of skill/experimentation as adjusting and learning with shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

It's a topic I have never experimented much with and hopefully will show my progress throughout the exam, so at the end it will be amazing and I would have learned a lot.
